It gives me great pleasure to report that this is the 125th Anniversary of the Calgary Bar Association. The Association has a long and illustrious history and it is my great honour and privilege to serve as its President during this anniversary year. On behalf of your Executive I would like to report on a series of significant events and developments that have either recently transpired or are upcoming for this calendar year.
Milvain Chair in Advocacy
In 1979, to commemorate the retirement of Chief Justice J.V.H. Milvain, the Calgary Bar Association commenced the annual funding of a visiting Chair in Advocacy at the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Law. The creation of the Chair has enabled the Faculty to invite a leading counsel or jurist to the Faculty each year to participate in the trial advocacy course and to present a special lecture to students and to members of the practicing and academic legal communities. The distinguished individuals who have held the Milvain Chair in Advocacy have been invaluable contributors to the instruction and promotion of Advocacy to law students in Calgary.
This year the Faculty of Law and Calgary Bar Association are pleased to report that Mr. David Tavender, Q.C. agreed to serve as the Chair. Mr. Tavender is a well-respected Calgary civil litigation lawyer, mediator and arbitrator, whose outstanding legal skills are only exceeded by his warm personality and good humour. Mr. Tavender’s lecture took place on Thursday, January 8, 2015 focusing on the topic of Appellate Advocacy.
The Calgary Bar Association has continued its proud tradition of making donations to local non-profit and charitable organizations. This past year we supported three such organizations:
- Calgary Legal Guidance;
- Alberta Lawyers Assistance Society; and
- Sheldon Kennedy Child Advocacy Centre.
New Scholarship at the University of calgary Faculty of Law
I am also pleased to announce that the Calgary Bar Association has been able to fund a new scholarship at the University of Calgary, Faculty of Law. Apart from academic merit, the successful recipient will also have been significantly involved within the community and with events and organizations at the Faculty of Law. This is a significant scholarship which has been endowed, and will continue on henceforth as a result of the generous donation we were able to make on behalf of all of our members.
We are excited about our upcoming events:
- MARCH 20, 2015
The Curling Bonspiel will be held once again at the Glencoe Club. As past participants can attest to, curling skills are not a prerequisite to participation! The event will start with a lunch followed by three games (or “draws” for those experienced curlers). Liquid refreshments are available between each game. We strongly encourage all of our members, especially first timers, to assemble a team and participate in this fun, social event. If you would like to curl but do not have enough members for a rink, send in your application and we will place you on a rink. Registration information is enclosed. Information is also available on our web site.
– JULY 7, 2015
What better way to start the Stampede than the annual CBA Stampede Whoop-up. Each and every year, this premier event provides a fantastic opportunity for members of the local Bar to engage in the social intercourse for which the Calgary Bar Association is famous for. Final details on this year’s Whoop-Up will be provided in a later notice and on our web site.
CHARITY GOLF TOURNAMENT
– September 11, 2015
Once again in 2015, the beautiful Banff Springs Golf Course will be the site for our annual golf tournament. The immaculate condition of the course, pristine setting, wonderful fellowship and hilarious commentary of the awards dinner MC make this a must play event. Further details will be provided in a later notice and on our web site.
Please take note of the fact that you must be a member of the CBA to attend any of these wonderful events. Avoid the inevitable line-up of lawyers purchasing a membership on the afternoon of the Stampede Whoop-Up and buy your membership early.
We hope that you will join the more than 2500 lawyers that make up the CBA. The membership fee for 2015 will remain at $65.00 (including GST). We hope that this will encourage all lawyers and students to join our association. A membership form is enclosed with this letter for those of you who prefer to use hard copy documents rather than registering online at calgarybarassociation.com.
On behalf of all of our Calgary Bar members, I thank our outgoing and engaging President, Sherry Kachur, Q.C. for her tireless work and significant contributions to our Association over the past seven years. It has been my pleasure to work with Sherry over those years. I look forward to one more year with Sherry on the Executive. Finally, 2014 also marked the end of eight years of service in our organization of Mark Morrison. Mark served our Association in a principled and thoughtful manner over his entire term. He will be missed, and Mark’s unique sense of humour will be memorable for many years to come.
In conclusion, your Executive is excited to launch into 2015 in this, the Association’s 125th Anniversary. We invite you to get on board and complete the attached membership form, and we look forward to seeing you at our events.
