President's Message

Greetings from the Calgary Bar Association.

In 1916, the Calgary Bar Association was established with the objectives, "…to advance the interests of the legal profession, uphold the honour of the profession of law and encourage cordial intercourse among its members." These worthwhile goals remain the ideal which the Calgary Bar Association strives to achieve.

To advance the interests of the legal profession, and uphold the honour of the profession of law, we are pleased to support worthwhile charitable initiatives – both those which directly benefit the legal community and those which benefit our community as a whole. During the last year, the CBA has been proud to sponsor Alberta Lawyers Assist (www.albertalawyersassist.ca), a charitable society providing assistance to lawyers, students and their families faced with personal challenges. In the community, the CBA supported Fuel for School, a charitable organization which works with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Calgary to provide nutritious breakfasts for children who would otherwise be attending school with empty stomachs.

In addition, commencing in 1979, the CBA commenced the annual funding of the Milvain Chair in Advocacy at the University of Calgary Faculty of Law. The creation of the Chair has enabled the Faculty to invite a leading counsel or jurist to the Faculty to participate in the Trial Advocacy Course and to present a special lecture to students, faculty and members of the legal community.

To promote "cordial intercourse" (also known as collegiality, but it's more fun to say cordial intercourse), the CBA is pleased to organize fantastic social events for CBA members. Signature events the CBA is proud to host include:

  • The Curling Bonspiel (March)
  • Judges Dinner/Q.C. Dinner (March)
  • Stampede Whoop Up (July)
  • Charity Golf Tournament (September)
  • Fall Bash and AGM (November)

Further details of these events may be found under the events tab above.

We look forward to sharing great fellowship, collegiality, and, of course, cordial intercourse with you at our next event.

See you soon!
