MILVAIN CHAIR IN ADVOCACY

In 1979, in honour of Chief Justice James Valentine Hogarth Milvain of the Supreme Court of Alberta, Trial Division (who retired at the beginning of that year), the Calgary Bar Association undertook to fund a Visiting Chair in Advocacy at the University of Calgary Law Faculty. The Chair is a tribute to the wisdom, humanity and sound guidance which Chief Justice Milvain exercised as a member of the Bench.

The purpose of the Chair is to enable the Law Faculty to invite a leading counsel each year to participate in the Faculty's Trial Advocacy course, and have that person present a special lecture to students and members of the practicing and academic legal communities.

Former Chief Justice Milvain was born in 1904 near Lundbreck, in what was then the Northwest Territories. He received his LL.B. from the University of Alberta in 1926 and was called to the Alberta Bar in 1927. He was appointed a King's Counsel in 1944, and a judge of the Alberta Supreme Court in 1959. He was appointed Chief Justice of that Court in 1968 and held that position until his retirement at the mandatory age of 75 in 1979. He was the recipient of two honorary doctorate of law degrees (from the University of Alberta and the University of Lethbridge) and was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1987. The Chief Justice Milvain School in Calgary was built in his honour in 1982. Former Chief Justice Milvain passed away in 1993 at the age of 89.
